GayRomLit- Repeat Offender - Kate McMurray
1. From all the amazing events, what was the one thing
that surprised you most about attending GRL?
Hopefully this
doesn't sound arrogant, but you could have knocked me over with a feather every
time someone came up to me and said, "Oh my god, I loved your book!" I felt so
small potatoes going into the convention! It turns out I have fans! Who
knew?
2. I HATE flying, but since I'm going to be coming from Michigan I have to. YIKES! Where will you be traveling from and who will you be bringing with you? Do you like to travel?
I'm flying from New York City. It'll just be me and my
giant suitcase, because I am a worst-case-scenario packer. I actually really
love to travel, even by plane. So I'm super psyched for this trip. I've never
been to the Southwest before. This is sad, but actually, the only place west of
the Mississippi I've ever been is San Francisco. (Also, I booked a flight at a
reasonable time this year! Last year, I had to catch a 6:30am flight Thursday
morning, which meant getting up at 4am and still being coherent enough to use
public transportation to get from my apartment in Brooklyn to JFK—no small
task!—and then I got to NOLA with enough time to eat lunch and take a shower
before jumping feet first into the convention. That was crazy; I do not
recommend it! This year my flight's at, like, 9am on Wednesday. Much more
humane.)
3. What was your favorite part of GRL last year?
For me, the best part was meeting everyone! I met so many
really great people, I talked about books I loved with readers, I met some of my
favorite authors, and I made some new friends. Meeting and talking with new
people was really the best part of the experience for me.
4. If you learned one thing from the event, what would it be?
For authors,
this is an incredible opportunity to connect with readers and other authors. As
a reader, it's an opportunity to be among other readers just like you—I think
romance readers sometimes feel isolated or don't have a lot of friends into the
same books, but here's a hotel full of people who are super passionate about the
genre. These are your people! Also, this event is a ton of fun. (That was, like,
three things, wasn't it?)
5. What advice can you give those who will be attending GRL for the first time?
Keep enough room in your luggage for all the stuff you're
going to bring back! (Not recommended: sitting on your suitcase and crying
frustrated tears because it won't close but you have to check out of your room
in the next five minutes. Guess who did that?)
6. Is there anything you didn't do at GRL last year that you wish you would have? Anything you would have done differently?
I don't have any regrets, although this year I signed up
for everything, because there were a couple of events I missed out on last year
because I didn't think to sign up for them. I do really wish I'd done a reading,
but I'm doing one this year, so problem solved.
7. I heard the Gentleman's party was a riot! Did you attend? Did those sexy boys make you blush?
It was a lot of fun! It's possible I drank a few (or
many) cocktails. And have some incriminating photos on my phone. Shh. (Actually,
I spent a lot of that evening sitting at the bar chatting with some book
bloggers and whoever else happened to come by. The bartender created a new
cocktail for us. Also, there was a very cute go-go boy who stood right in front
of me in a pair of very tight briefs, and then he said, "Um, normally I do this
naked? Would that be weird for you?" We were like, "Uh, no, rock out with your
cock out." So he did.) (It's dangerous to let me loose at an open-bar party,
apparently.)
8. What was interacting with the readers and other authors like?
Amazing! Seriously my favorite part of the
event.
9. They say what happens at GRL stays at GRL, any naughty stories you would like to share?
I behaved myself (mostly) although the last night, I was
in a gay bar and had to use the restroom. Of course, there was only one (which
was really clean, incidentally), but it was fine. On my way out, a couple walked
in while making eyes at each other, and I'm pretty sure I know what happened
after that. (Writers, use your imagination!) Also, a dude hit on me at the same
bar, which I thought was kind of weird, like, "You might be in the wrong place.
Did you not notice the boys in thongs dancing on the bar?"
10. And because I'm just naughty that way, I've always wondered what men wear under their kilts. Did you personally find out what Damon Suede wears under his?
All I'm going to say is that he wears a kilt in the
correct way.
Blurb for Four Corners:
Since
childhood, Jake, Adam, Kyle, and Brendan have been teammates, best friends,
brothers. Then one day, when they were twenty-five, Adam disappeared without a
word, devastating his friends—none more so than Jake, who had secretly loved
Adam since they were teenagers.
Now, five years later, Adam is back, and he has his mind set on Jake. But those years of anger, hurt, and confusion are a lot to overcome, and Jake doesn’t find it easy to forgive. He isn’t sure they’ll ever fit together the way they did. Jake, Kyle, and Brendan have moved on with their lives, but Adam’s high-profile career keeps him in the closet—the same place he’s been for years. Still, his apologies seem sincere, and the attraction is still there. Jake desperately wants to give him a chance. But first he has to find out why Adam left and if he’s really back for good.
