After a six-month online affair, Matty agrees to meet Jay in Florida for a weekend getaway. Only Jay isn't what Matty expected; although, perhaps he should have known it was too good to be true.
After all, Jay's screen name AlwaysMJ stands for 'Always making jokes'--or does it?
AlwaysMJ: Did you make it to the airport?
MattyJohn1981: Yeah. I'm sitting here in the bar trying to drink up some liquid courage.
AlwaysMJ: You had better not be. You have a rental car waiting for you. I don't think they will give you the keys if you're sloshed.
MattyJohn1981: I was kidding. I'm sitting at the gate. Though I wish I was drinking at the bar.
AlwaysMJ: Still nervous about flying, or is it seeing me that has you so freaked out?
AlwaysMJ: You don't have to come if you're not ready. I'll understand, honest.
MattyJohn1981: I do want to come. Just a little nervous, ya know?
AlwaysMJ: Yeah I get that, but I'm glad you're coming. I can't wait to see you.
MattyJohn1981: I can't wait to see you either.
AlwaysMJ: Have a safe flight. I love you!
MattyJohn1981: Love you too. See you soon.
Oh Christ, he was going to do it!
Matthew Jonathon Parker, Matty to his friends, never did anything spontaneous. He planned every aspect of his day. From the time he woke up until the exact minute he crawled back into bed, his day was set. Hell, he'd been like that since he was a kid. By the age of ten, he'd written out his life plan. Over the last twenty years he hadn't deviated, not even slightly, from that original goal.
Graduate in the top ten of his high school class.
Attend University of Michigan. Go Blue!
Director of Finance at his father's accounting firm.
He wasn't the kind of man who sought out other men in chat rooms. He didn't go without sleep or change his daily schedule to talk to a stranger on the internet for hours on end. Never would he dream of sharing his most private thoughts or intimate secrets in an instant message. Moreover, he damn sure didn't fall in love with someone he'd never met. Especially if he hadn't even heard the sound of his voice. Yet, he had.
Six months ago, during a complete poor-me moment, after once again being dumped, he entered an online chat room for the first time. Why the hell he'd sought out that type of social media to prove he wasn't rigid and boring, he didn't have a clue. Thinking back now, it was stupid, but hey, people do dimwitted shit when their egos have just been spanked. Matty hadn't added to the conversation that night, and it was a little creepy being a lurker. Still, he'd have felt even more ridiculous adding to the conversation in a room full of six-foot, buff, blond-haired and blue-eyed, rich, perfect men. Especially since he would have been the only man standing five foot ten inches with dark brown hair and hazel eyes that worked for a living and had flaws. At least he had the buff body. One out of six wasn't bad. Yeah, what a joke.
It was after he had left the chat room, feeling even more like a loser, that an instant message from AlwaysMJ had popped up on his computer screen. Then everything changed.
